Tree growth

Redwood trees can reach up to 100 meters – they are among the worlds tallest tree species. Is’s even more impressive if you think about the demands of being such a height (e.g. for stability and water transport). Height and growth of trees are important information’s for scientists as well as foresters.

Fortunately to determine the trees height doesn’t necessarily involve climbing and long tape measures. There is a method involving geometry: As soon as you know the distance to the tree base and the angle you see to the treetop you can calculate its height.

In the botanical garden there is a measuring-device that allows you to measure the height of the redwood tree. Record the value in the following form and you can view a growth-curve of the last months, created from all our previous visitors’ measurements.

As you see the redwood tree is growing pretty fast – in good years up to 1 meter.
